1. What is the duration of the compulsory preparatory program in the Department of Basic English?

The normal education period in compulsory preparatory instruction is 1 (one) academic year. At the end of the following academic year, students who are successful start their courses at the University; those who are unsuccessful will not be able to attend classes. These students are only entitled to 4 English Proficiency Exams. Students who do not use these rights to take the exams or who have failed in all of them will be placed in the programs which have the same name and the language of instruction by the ÖSYM in accordance with the principles determined by the Council of Higher Education.  Students who do not apply for this placement are automatically discharged from the University.

 

2. If I finish the compulsory preparatory program in the Department of Basic English in the fall semester, can I take courses from the faculty in the spring semester?

Yes, you can. Students who successfully complete the compulsory preparatory program in one semester (who are successful in the English Proficiency Exam and enrolled in 4-year faculties) start taking courses from their respective departments in the 2nd semester.

 

3. Do I need to enroll in the Department of Basic English for compulsory preparatory instruction?

No, you do not. Follow the announcements from YTU School of Foreign Languages ​​website because you need to go to your department and register the course yourself if you pass the compulsory preparatory program in the Department of Basic English.

 

4. I registered as a foreign student at the university. When can I start my prep class?

Foreign students enrolled in Yıldız Technical University are directed to either YTU TÖMER or School of Foreign Languages ​​according to their proficiency certificates and their departments in the faculties by the International Student Office. Students who do not have Turkish proficiency will continue to YTÜ TÖMER in the first academic year. At the beginning of the next academic year, the International Student Office sends a list of students who are successful in YTU TÖMER to the School of Foreign Languages ​​and this list is announced on the website of the School of Foreign Languages. The required procedure is carried out by the School of Foreign Languages ​​in order for those who have a name in the list to enter the exam in September. Students who do not have to attend YTÜ TÖMER (students who are proficient in Turkish) can register directly in the compulsory preparatory course in the Department of Basic English.

 

5. Is it compulsory for newly-registered students to attend the Orientation Program of the Department of Basic English?

Yes, it is. Participation in the program is absolutely compulsory, as the Orientation Program provides detailed information about the compulsory preparatory education. All the information you need to know will be given in detail in the Orientation Program and all the questions that our students wonder about will be answered. If you do not participate in the orientation, you may be deprived of academic matters and obligations that you need to know. The dates and times of the orientation program will be announced on the website of the School of Foreign Languages.

 

6. Where can I learn my timetable and class code?

Timetables and class codes are announced on the website of the School of Foreign Languages, just before the beginning of the academic year.

 

7. Where can I get my textbooks and supplementary materials?

Desks where the publishing houses sell their books are set up in the building of the School of Foreign Languages, at the beginning of each semester. You can obtain your textbooks here or from the publishers. The materials / photocopies requested by the Department of Basic English or the instructors can be obtained from the photocopy section in the basement of the school building.

 

8. Do I have to attend classes?

Yes, in the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program, there is a requirement of at least 85% attendance for each semester. The period of absence of the first period cannot be transferred to the second term. Acceptance of long-term absences due to the health problems documented by the Health Board Report and the obligation to participate in the sportive and cultural activities of our university are subject to the decision of the YTU SFL Administrative Board. Other reports are deducted from the student's absenteeism limit. Students who exceed their absenteeism limit cannot attend classes and cannot take any examination for the rest of the semester.

 

9. How can I find out my absenteeism?

You can learn about your absenteeism via OBS (Student Information System), which you can access from the the Basic English Department tab on your website.

 

10. When do I have to submit my health report?

You have to submit your health board report to the Department of Basic English in the 3 (three) working days after it has expired. For instance, if you have a health board report valid between 1st and 10th of a month, you have to submit it to the Department of Basic English in the 3 (three) working days after the 10th of the month, i.e. on 11th, 12th or 13th of the month. Any health board report that is not submitted within this legal time limit WILL NOT be accepted.

 

11. Is the absenteeism limit of the students who are registered through any kind of extra quota placement different from the ones who are regularly places at the start of September?

No, the absenteeism limit is the same for the extra quota placement students as well.

 

12. What happens if the students who are registered thorugh extra quota placement miss a quiz or a midterm?

The weighting of the exam that these students miss are automatically added to the wieghting of the exam of the same type.

 

13. My absenteeism was announced, but I think there is an error. What should I do?

You can apply to the Office of Student Affairs of the Department of Basic English. You are responsible for notifying your absenteeism in writing such as the Health Board Report. Submitting your documents on time and keeping track of your absenteeism is entirely your own responsibility.

 

14. If I exceed the absenteeism limit, can I take the English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

No, students who do not fulfill the 85% attendance condition cannot attend the courses as of the announcement date of the absenteeism limits and cannot take any exam neither in the remaining period of the term nor the following term if they fail in the fall term term nor sit the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the end of both fall and spring semesters. These students, however, have the right to enter the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in September at the start of the following academic year.

 

15. I failed in the fall term due to absenteeism. Can I attend classes in the spring term?

Such students are still considered students of the Department of Basic English at the YTU SFL. However, students who are declared to have failed due to the absenteeism cannot attend classes as of the date of the announcement and cannot take any exams in the rest of the semester. Such students who cannot pass to the department become ‘pending’ students for the next year. They can only take 4 English Proficiency Exams (İYS).

 

16. In the first year of the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program, I failed. What are my rights?

Students who fail due to failure or absenteeism in the first year do not have the right to repeat the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program for the 2nd year. They can only take 4 English Proficiency Exams (İYS).

 

17. Can students who are placed in A1 and A2 levels at the beginning of the fall term take the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the end of the fall term?

No, they can't. These students continue their education during the fall and spring semesters because they have started the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program from the lower levels.

 

18. What are the conditions to finish the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program at the end of the fall term?

You need to ensure the following conditions:

 

-- To fulfill the obligation of 85% attendance,

-- To get on average a Grand Point Average of at least 60 (sixty) points out of 100 (one hundred) if you are placed at B1 or B1 + level after the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the beginning of the Fall Semester,

-- To get on average a Grand Point Average of at least 85 (eighty five) points out of 100 (one hundred) if you are placed at A1 or A2 level after the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the beginning of the Fall Semester, 

-- To get at least 60 (sixty) points from out of 100 (hundred) points from the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in January

 

In addition, the students who submit within the legal period their official score documents related to the examinations whose equivalence to English Proficiency Exam (İYS) is accepted by YTU Senate are exempted from the preparatory education by the decision of the Administrative Board of the School of Foreign Languages.

 

19. What are the conditions to finish the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program at the end of the spring term?

 

-- To fulfill the obligation of 85% attendance,

-- To have as the fall and spring semester average a Grand Point Average of at least 60 (sixty) points  our of 100 (one hundred) for all levels in the spring semester

-- To get at least 60 (sixty) points out of 100 (hundred) points from the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in June

 

Students who do not meet these requirements cannot take the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the end of the spring semester and therefore cannot finish the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program at the end of the spring semester. These students become pending students.

 

20. What should I get from examinations equivalent to the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in order to be exempted from the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program or to pass the preparatory class?

Some of the exams accepted as equivalent to the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) and the minimum scores to be taken from these exams are as follows:

English Language Teaching students are required to bring the following grades for exemption:

21. Is it mandatory for newly registered students to enter the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in September?

It depends on what you understand from ‘mandatory’. You will be exempted according to the results of your examination in September or you will continue with the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program. If you continue with the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program, you will be placed in a level according to the exam grade, i.e. no extra exam will be made to determine your level.

Otherwise, you start your learning at a level that is not appropriate for your actual language level. If your level is actually higher, you get bored be and absent in classes as a result, or you have trouble adjusting to a class higher than your actual level, and you get bored and absent as a result, thus fail.

 

22. Is a level-setting or a level-change exam conducted when the semester starts in September?

No. There is no upwards or downwards mobility between levels. According to the grade you receive from the English Proficiency Exam (İYS), you will stay in the level in which you are placed for a semester.

 

23. I've become a pending student. Do I need to register to enter the English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

No, you do not need to register to enter the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) because the information of the pending students is already available in our database.

 

24. I could not find my name in the list of the students to take the English Proficiency Exam (İYS). What should I do?

25. What are the documents that should be with us on the exam day to enter the English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

The documents required for the English Proficiency Exam will be available on the Yıldız Technical University website as well as on that of the School of Foreign Languages. Please check those websites regularly.

 

26. In order to be exempt from the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program and Advanced English courses, what should I take from the English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

The score required for exemption from the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program is at least 60 (C +) out of 100. Students who score 70 and above will also be exempt from Advanced English I and Advanced English II courses.

 

27. Is there a make-up exam for the English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

No. In addition, the students placed in A1 or A2 levels because they did not / could not take the English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the beginning of the Fall Semester start the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program from the lower levels and these students do not have the right to enter English Proficiency Exam (İYS) at the end of the fall term.

 

28. Where can I get the sample English Proficiency Exam (İYS)?

Exam samples can be obtained from the photocopy center of the School of Foreign Languages ​​and from our website in the Student tab.

 

29. Can I object to my English Proficiency Exam (İYS) score? How should I appeal?

Yes, you can. Following the announcement of the results of the exam results (in three work days), you can appeal to the Student Affairs Office of the Department of Basic English by using the petition form in the Contact section of this website. Your friend for you apply, too. Objections made by WhatsApp or e-mail are NOT considered.

 

30. Why does the result of my English Proficiency Exam not show up in OBS?

The grades of the students who have taken 60 and above in the CMS are transferred to OBS. Thus, students can choose courses. The grade of the students who are required to attend the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program or the students who are in a pending position are not processed in the system.

 

31. I passed the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program at the end of the Fall Term. Can I continue the courses in the Program for the second semester?

No. If you are successful in the English Proficiency Exam (İYS), you cannot attend the courses in the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program.

 

32. I want to get a transcript. What should I do?

No. Getting a passing grade from a preparatory program of another university (state, foundation or private) does not allow you to be exempted from the Department of Basic English Compulsory English Program at Yıldız Technical University.

 

37. My department is 100% Turkish, if I want, can I still get preparatory education?

No. Even if your department is 100% Turkish, you do not have any optional preparatory education according to the School of Foreign Languages ​​Teaching and Examination Directive.

 

38. I want to learn all the official exams and holidays of the University. Where can I find out about that?

40. I lost my stuff (at school), what should I do?

Our school is not responsible for lost property. You must stop by the Security Desk at the entrance of the SFL building for the forgotten or lost items.

 

41. Why am I not accepted to class when I'm late?

According to the School of Foreign Languages ​​Teaching and Examination Directive, students who arrive late to the classes are not admitted and they are marked as ‘absent’ in the attendance sheet.

 

42. What should I do if a friend or I experience health problems in school?
