The Basic English Department offers a mandatory two-semester English preparatory program for students admitted to Yıldız Technical University’s undergraduate programs in which at least 30% of the instruction is conducted in English. This program consists of two semesters, each lasting at least 15 weeks. It aims to equip students with the basic language skills they will need in their respective departments.
At Yıldız Technical University, students enrolled in undergraduate programs where at least 30% of the instruction is conducted in English are required to take an English Proficiency Exam (İYS) in September, at the beginning of the academic year, to determine the English proficiency level necessary to continue in their respective programs. Students who fail to demonstrate English proficiency on this exam are required to enroll in the English preparatory program. To be successful, students must score at least 60 out of 100 on the English Proficiency Exam. Students who meet this requirement are exempt from the preparatory program.
Additionally, students who achieve the scores listed below on national and international exams are exempt from the English Preparatory Program. These exams and the minimum scores required are as follows:
The academic performance of students in the Basic English Department’s mandatory preparatory program is calculated based on the weighted averages of short quizzes, midterm exams, online exercises, class participation grades, and writing assignments administered each semester. Students who fail the two-semester preparatory program cannot repeat it the following year. Students who fail are entitled to four English Proficiency Exams (İYS) starting with the following academic year.
Students who fail despite using all their English Proficiency Exam (İYS) attempts will, upon request, be placed by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) into programs with the same name but taught in Turkish, in accordance with the rules established by the Council of Higher Education.
