WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE CLASS I SELECTED IS CANCELED?
Once the add/drop period for the relevant term has ended, there may be changes to the group numbers and classroom information of the announced groups due to closed groups. Students in the closed section will be transferred to another section in the same day and time slot. Therefore, be sure to check your current section number via OBS after course registration is complete.
FOR SOME REASON, I CAN’T ATTEND CLASS IN THE GROUP I CHOSE. CAN I CONTINUE TAKING THE COURSE IN A DIFFERENT GROUP THAN THE ONE I’M REGISTERED FOR?
You are required to continue the course in the group in which you originally selected it.
IS ATTENDANCE MANDATORY?
There is a 70% attendance requirement for all courses offered by MDB. Only students who have previously taken the course and completed the term with a passing grade or a failing grade other than F0 are exempt from the attendance requirement. Students who previously took the course and failed due to absences, as well as students who earned a score of 70 or higher on the English Proficiency Exam to gain exemption from the course but wish to improve their grade, are subject to the attendance requirement.
Total allowed absences:
12 class hours for all 3-credit MDB courses.
8 class hours for all 2-credit MDB courses.
Students who exceed these limits will fail the course due to absences (grade F0). Medical reports obtained from an official healthcare institution, or those obtained from private institutions and certified by the YTÜ Health Center or any other official institution, are included in the 30% excused absence allowance and do not count toward the 70% attendance requirement. Medical reports submitted in addition to the allowed absence allowance will not be accepted. All department faculty members are required to take attendance; please do not contact the course instructor regarding absences.
It is the students’ responsibility to check their current group number and classroom information via OBS. Otherwise, they will be considered absent even if they attended class in a different group.
Classes begin and attendance is taken starting from the first week.
Students with a high level of proficiency in a foreign language are not granted the right to skip class.
If you have a conflict with an exam for any other course on the same day and time slot as your MDB-coded course, this will still be included in your 30% excused absence allowance.
ARE MDB COURSES CANCELED DURING MY DEPARTMENT’S EXAM WEEK?
No, they are not canceled. The schedule for your MDB-coded course is independent of your department’s exam week, and the course is conducted according to the weekly schedule provided in the course materials.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE MIDTERM OR FINAL EXAM FOR AN MDB COURSE CONFLICTS WITH A COURSE IN MY OWN DEPARTMENT?
In such a case, service courses take priority. Therefore, you must submit a written excuse to your department for the other course or consult with the instructor of that course to arrange an alternative exam date.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MISS A MIDTERM EXAM FOR MY MDB COURSE?
You must submit a written request stating your reason for absence (or, if available, a medical certificate covering at least 3 days) to your department within 3 business days. If your department accepts your excuse, it will send a formal letter to the Department of Modern Languages requesting that you be allowed to take the makeup exam for the exam you missed. Our department will then add you to the relevant makeup exam list. Make-up exams are generally held during the last week of the semester; however, the exam schedule—including the final date, day, time, and exam room information—is posted under the “MDB Announcements” heading at “www.ybdyildiz.edu.tr.”
I WAS UNABLE TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM. WHAT CAN I DO?
There are no make-up exams for final exams. In accordance with the update made to the YTÜ Exam Regulations in December 2025, “students whose end-of-semester exam grade is less than 40/100 or who do not take the end-of-semester exam are considered to have failed the course (DD, FD, FF).” These students are granted the right to take the make-up exam without having to submit any application.
MY END-OF-TERM GRADE WAS LOWER THAN I EXPECTED. WHAT CAN I DO?
Within 5 (five) business days following the day your end-of-term grade is announced, by 4:00 PM, you must submit a written request to the Department of Modern Languages stating that you wish to have your final exam paper reviewed for any material errors.
CAN I USE A GRADE I RECEIVED ON A NATIONALLY OR INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EXAM TO BE EXEMPT FROM MDB COURSES OR TO IMPROVE MY GRADE?
Yes, you may take advantage of this option for the Advanced English 1 and Advanced English 2 courses. You may apply to the Department of Modern Languages with your exam result certificate and a written request. The relevant conditions are as follows:
